THE PRACTICE
At Santa Cruz Movement (SCM) we are building a community around a Movement Practice influenced by the work and philosophies of . In our group classes our students develop and refine spinal health, strength, mobility, coordination, prehab/rehab protocols and cultivate an awareness of a Movement and an internal practice.
We want our students to develop a generalist movement perspective; oriented towards growth and evolution across all fields and areas in life. Our practice connects elements from several fields and disciplines such as in sports, dance, martial arts, yoga and parkour. Our focus is to foster deep exploration and discovery in each individual no matter their skill level and to encourage an open-mind and play.

WHO WE ARE

Leela Kalow and Dean Yerushalmy are the only two people in Santa Cruz, California teaching classes based on the work and philosophies of Ido Portal under his direct guidance in his Mentorship Program. We are honored to be in this select group of mentees from all over the world who come together throughout the year to continue our studies and to build our own communities through movement. Our varied backgrounds in sports and dance is what lead us organically to study with Ido.

Leela Kalow is the Co-Owner and Founder of Santa Cruz Movement located in Santa Cruz, CA. She is originally from Santa Cruz where she dedicated much of her youth to serious study in dance. After her travels post high school and volunteering in Tanzania and Israel, Leela relocated to Tel Aviv where she received her BA in Communications from Tel Aviv University. While studying at TAU, she began teaching yoga at several studios and eventually transitioned full time into teaching Movement classes under the direct guidance of Ido Portal.
Leela began her Movement studies with Ido in 2014 and has been in his Mentorship Program since 2016. Ido is the biggest influence in her development as a practitioner and a teacher. After eight years living in Tel Aviv and five years teaching and working there, she moved home to Santa Cruz in the summer of 2018 and opened Santa Cruz Movement with her partner Dean.

Dean Yerushalmy is the Co-Owner and Founder of Santa Cruz Movement located in Santa Cruz, CA. He is originally from Tel Aviv, Israel where he grew up actively playing sports, surfing and served in the Navy. After his service in the Navy, Dean studied to become a Physical Therapist under Tal Ziv focused in Myofascial Release Therapy and a Physical Fitness trainer through Tel Aviv University. He began his Movement studies with Ido Portal in 2014. After he finished his studies Dean started to work with clients from the world of dance, martial arts, CrossFit, military and more. Eventually, Dean began teaching Movement classes under the direct guidance of Ido Portal since joining his Mentorship Program in 2016.
In 2018 Dean moved to Santa Cruz, CA and opened Santa Cruz Movement with his partner Leela.

Leila Elizabeth became a student of Dean and Leela in 2018 after nearly 15 years of intensive percussion and dance studies. She has focused almost exclusively on the traditional and modern music and dances of West Africa and the Diaspora, focusing on the arts of several different ethnic groups within Mali, Guinea and Senegal. Her study of music and percussion dates back to childhood and she is recognized both in the Bay Area and abroad for her performances and workshops as a drummer in various bands and musical ensembles. Leila believes deeply in the importance of tradition, discipline and preserving the transmission of artistic and somatic knowledge from teacher to student. Her dedication to her practice at Santa Cruz Movement over the years has not only enhanced her ability to perform better as a dancer and musician, but has also helped facilitate dramatically improved physical and mental health, a deepened sense of community and most humbly, the opportunity to elevate to a teaching position where she is now able to passionately share the beauty and magic of a movement practice with others in a kind, supportive and empathetic way.
